Erstellt am 08.06.2021

The Geisteswissenschaften International Nonfiction Translation Prize (GINT) is entering its fifth round. Talented German-English translators have until June 30th to take part in the competition organized by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers and Booksellers Association). The competition is open to applicants who have not yet translated more than one complete book from German into English. The first-place winner will receive $1,500; the second-place winner $1,000; and the third-place winner $500. The three prizewinners will be announced in mid-September and invited to participate in a virtual Science Slam at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October.

Translators are asked to submit their own translation of a text excerpt taken from Mischa Meier’s groundbreaking work Geschichte der Völkerwanderung Europa, Asien und Afrika vom 3. bis zum 8. Jahrhundert n.Chr. (tr. A History of the Migration of Peoples: Europe, Asia and Africa from the 3rd to the 8th Century AD), first published by C.H.Beck in 2019. The organizers have requested that the translation be from German into American English. Meier’s book is the recipient of the 2021 “WISSEN! Sachbuchpreis der wbg für Geisteswissenschaften,” a prominent book prize in Germany. The cooperative partnership between the Börsenverein and the wbg was created as a way to foster the book’s distribution in English-speaking countries. The text excerpt is already available online for download

This year’s three GINT prizewinners will be chosen by a jury consisting of four experienced translators: Shelley Frisch, award-winning author, lecturer and jury chair; Sarah Pybus, winner of the very first GINT Prize in 2015; Emma Rault, winner of the second GINT Prize in 2017; and Paula Bradish, translator and rights manager at Hamburger Edition publishers.

About GINT

The GINT Translation Competition is designed to draw the attention of English-language scholars and publishing companies to outstanding German monographs in the humanities and social sciences. It acts as a complement to the program known as the “Geisteswissenschaften International,“ which is a cooperative partnership among the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers and Booksellers Association), the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the German Foreign Office and the VG WORT collecting agency. These four bodies have worked together to support translations in the humanities and social sciences since 2008.
